Buses (or omnibus) were originally horse-drawn passenger vehicles, the first recorded one being in 1820. Steam powered buses began to be used from 1830, followed by electric trolleybuses in 1882.
The first internal combustion engine bus was used in 1895 and is the most common type of bus in use today for public transport. Most buses now use diesel engines, although newer more eco-friendly technology is appearing.
